Enrique Peñalosa, former Mayor of Bogotá and one of the world’s most challenging urban thinkers, describes the urgent need for governments to create socially inclusive and well-designed transport systems, public spaces and cities. Addressing mobility, public space, equity, quality of life and social inclusion, Peñalosa will propose that inequality and exclusion are the main causes of the problems that affect cities in developing countries, particularly issues relating to mobility and sustainability. Enrique Peñalosa was mayor of Bogotá, 1998-2001, and now acts as a consultant on urban vision. His advisory work concentrates on sustainability, mobility, equity, public space and quality of life.

This innovative series brings together Bastyr experts and leading local authorities on physical, mental and spiritual health to discuss how each focus area is vital to whole-person health and health care. The Feb. 1 event captured in this video covers “Mind” and features Bastyr University faculty member Brad Lichtenstein, ND; Seattle naturopathic physician Sheila Dunn-Merritt; and Robert V. Taylor, author of “I’m Spiritual Not Religious: Making Sense of Finding Meaning.”

The discussion on Feb. 8 revolved around “Spirit” and included Rabbi Ted Falcon, PhD, co-founder of Bet Alef Meditative Synagogue in Seattle; Terrill L. Gibson, PhD, pastoral psychotherapist; and Leanna Standish, ND, PhD, LAc, FABNO, medical director of the Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center (BIORC).

A Doctor’s Reflections on Illness in a High-Tech Era (February 18, 2009)
Robert L. Martensen, M.D., Ph.D. (Director, Office of History, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland; Lecturer, Department of Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts; and Adviser, American College of Surgeons and Cunniff-Dixon Foundation on Palliative Care Education for Physicians) addressed the reasons for writing his book entitled, “A Life Worth Living: A Doctor’s Reflections on Illness in a High-Tech Era.” Dr. Martenson covered aspects of change and continuity in the practice and delivery of medical care in the United States. Specifically he discussed the elements of specialization, affluence, commercial values in medicine, the effects of medicare, the need for effectiveness research,” the prevalence of “corrupted speech,” and changes in the “social contract” of medicine. He concluded with questioning what it means to “live with a disease,” to “have interventions administered,” and to trust information regarding treatment options and ethical judgements/advice.
