TEDxManhattanBeach – Idris Al-Oboudi – Parks Make Life Better
Idris Al-Oboudi is a nationally recognized Recreation and Parks professional and public speaker. He has been working in the field of recreation for the past 28 years. He is currently the Manager of Parks and Recreation for the City of Man- hattan Beach, California. In February 2008, Idris, received the Professional Distinguished Service Award, the highest award bestowed by the NRPA Pacific Southwest Regional Council. It recognizes professionals in the region who have consistently given outstanding service to the park, recreation and conservation movement at the state, national and, in the case of Idris, the international level.

The Mirror in My Mind: Body Image & Self-Esteem prev. part 2
We live in a media saturated world where we are constantly bombarded with images of supposedly “beautiful people.” Everywhere we look – in magazines, on bilboards, on TV, and in the movies, there are surgicaly perfected women who are unrealistically thin and men whose muscles ripple and bulge. How can the rest of us measure up to these standards? and why should we? This video explores and explains the damages these cultural forces can do to a young persons developing sense of self-worth. Many teenagers are likely to develop a negative body image if they feel their body deviates too far from the “cultural norm.” In extreme cases, these negative body images can develop into body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) sometimes called the “disease of imagined ugliness.” Real-life tesitmonials from young people who struggled with realted issues such as: steroid abuse, anorexia, and bulimia provide a keen insight to the hazards body image anxieties can create. This video offers strategies that teens can use to feel good about themselves and about their bodies. Some of the learning objectives are: students will consider the role that body image plays in the development of self-esteem – students will learn to eliminate negative self-talk – provides tips for improving self-esteem – learn the symtoms of BDD – learn that physical perfection is not a goal worth chasing. part 2 preview time approx: 04:00, total run time: 29:00 minutes.
