How to reduce stress tips

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become” – Buddha

Stress is inevitable and often seems uncontrollable, but we do have the power to control how we let stress affect us. Learning the different tips on how to reduce stress will help you eliminate the stress you are faced with on a daily basis.

1. Get a good night’s sleep every night

The importance of getting a good night’s sleep is that your mind has time to recharge and work through all of the daily conflicts in your life. Those who do not get enough sleep during the night tend to be more impulsive, moody, angry and hostile. You can even test for yourself how your sleep habits affect your reaction to stressing events – keep a journal of the days where you got a poor night’s sleep and of those where you got a good night’s sleep. Then, note the differences in how you control your temper, your impulses, and your patience and what your levels of anxiety and hostility are. If your mind is not given an opportunity to rest and re-charge it cannot function properly because it cannot come up with unique ways of solving problems. When you are sleep deprived and are faced with a unique, stressful situation, your mind will not have the ability to come up with a novel way to evaluate and calculate a rational reaction to the situation at hand; instead it will panic and cause you to act in an inappropriate impulsive manner.

2. Get all of your vitamins and nutrients throughout the day

Everyone reacts to stress differently – some people under eat while other people overeat. It is important to keep in mind that no matter what you go through on a daily basis, you must get all of the vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. If you do not give your body the essentials, it will quickly shut down. Not only that, but you will feel tired much more rapidly and depleted of energy, which in turn will make you angry, hostile, and impatient. Note the difference in how you deal with daily stresses when you are lacking energy versus when you are full of life. Make sure you eat a hearty breakfast as it is the most important meal of the day!! If you need guidance of what sort of nutrients and vitamins your body needs, visit the Canadian Health Food Guide.

3. Learn how to achieve balance in your life

Nothing in extreme is ever good for anyone, so you must learn to balance every aspect of your life. Take time for yourself and really evaluate your life – are you overworking yourself? are you too hard on your self? Once you have evaluated the possible extremities in your life, learn to find a way to balance everything out. It is okay to work long hours if necessary, but make sure you take time to unwind, and once the long hours in the office starts taxing your well-being, do all you can to reduce the long hours. When you subject yourself to extremities, you are subjecting yourself to continuous strenuous activity (whether mental or physical) which in turn will cause your mind and body to shut down and be worn out. As soon as your body and mind shut down, you will not be able to cope or reduce the daily stressors in your life.

4. Take time for yourself

What is life about if not living? You can tell me you’re alive so you’re living, but living is much more than being alive – it’s about enjoying yourself, being at peace with yourself, and enjoying the beauty nature has to offer. Take time to heal your soul and your mind, which can easily be done by taking a vacation somewhere, going to a relaxing spa, going up to a cottage with the family, or spending family day inside. However long your relaxation period may be, it is important and necessary in order to reduce stress because it gives you time to get away from all the stressing events which happen in your life and after you have time to relax you can re-evaluate the stressors in a much more rational and creative way.

5. Learn how to breathe

Meditation techniques are your number one way to reduce stress. It allows you to focus on your breathing and ignore external stimuli or disturbances. Once you master meditation, you can quickly and efficiently apply it to your every day life. For example, your boss is yelling at you for something which you do not believe he has the right to be yelling about. A simple breathing technique will teach you self-control and how to react in an appropriate manner. Not only does this reduce the stress coming your way, but it will reduce further stressors which may have taken place if you had reacted to this situation in an impulsive way. Meditation seems like a very primitive way of reducing stress, but it truly works wonders. If you want to learn meditation techniques, most local gyms and community centers offer this program. Take an hour of your day to achieve inner peace.

6. Take situations for face value

When under stress, it is very easy to take the situation and blow it out of proportion. How many times did something which you thought was catastrophic and disastrous only to realize a couple hours later that it really wasn’t that big of a deal. We are all guilty of catastrophic thinking, but by reducing this mind frame you will reduce the way you view and evaluate the stressors in your life. Realize that stress begins in the mind and stress only affects us the way we let it affect us – we do have control!!

7. Listen to Relaxing Music, Pick up a Book, Enjoy a good laugh

They say music is the key to the soul and for many it really is. Many studies have shown that a very powerful way to reduce stress is to listen to calming music – anything from classical music to sounds of nature. Take about 30 minutes of your day to just sit and listen to music – allow your body and your mind to unwind with no distractions.

Do you find yourself at home and in need of some entertainment? Well, for at least one night a week, don’t pick up the remote and instead pick up a book. Television can be great for entertainment, but not only is it junk food for the brain, it also feeds on insecurities of society in order to “hook” you into all of the drama. We all feed into the drama because we find ways to relate it to our lives and for a moment we think “Oh Gee, their life is just as bad as mine, if not worse!”. The problem with this is that it stirs up emotions and creates anxiety. When you pick up a book, however, your mind is working and it is getting the exercise that it needs. When you provide your mind with exercise, you’re allowing your mind to develop in a way which it can adapt to new situations and solve problems very easily and efficiently. In addition, the content in books is different then what you see on television; it’s more rich, more educational, and the main goal of books is not to appeal to the anxieties of society.

Take time to laugh! Laughter is very good for your mental being; it gives your mind a break. I will give you a brief neuro-scientific reason behind why laughter has a powerful ability to reduce stress. When you laugh, hormones change in your body – specifically neuroendocrine hormones which are involved in the natural stress response. Neuroendocrine hormones, including cortisol and epinephrine, are reduced. The importance of Epinephrine reduction is that the Epinephrine hormone is involved in fight or flight response, which causes you to have an increased heart rate and constricted blood vessels. The importance of Cortisol reduction is that Cortisol is a hormone which gets released during stressful events and in turn suppresses the immune system, increases blood sugar, and decreases bone formation. When you try to laugh as much and as often as possible, you are changing the hormonal levels in your body, which in turn helps you reduce the impacts of stress.

8. Exercise

Last, but not least, exercise on a daily basis! Exercise is important for stress reduction because it releases endorphins – the feel good hormones. That is why many people say that exercise is addictive once you get into it – because it really makes you feel good. Start with a little each day and do not overwork yourself beyond your limit. Pop in a dance video or hop on the treadmill for 20-30 minutes per day.

You can live a stress free live with a little effort. Stress doesn’t have to be a burden, we all have the power to control how we let it affect us! Come visit http://www.battlethestress.com to learn the ways that you can reduce the stress in your life!

Reducing Stress: How To Reduce Stress The Right Way

Since stress is a function of two forces in opposition, we can reduce stress by changing the oppositional forces, or by changing our perspective on them. If a person is in rush hour traffic and traveling less than one mile per hour and worried about being home on time for dinner, the person is likely to be stressed out. If your younger son is habitually late to family functions and expect him to be on time, this will likely cause a stressful reaction. Unpredictable weather conditions such as those that occurred over the holidays in Europe, causing airports to shut down and strand travelers at airports cause stress for thousands of people. Does this sound stressful? You bet it does. How is it possible to reduce one’s stress under such dreadful circumstances?

Unemployment rates are higher than ever before. We now have to monitor our kids’ activities on Facebook. Divorce rates are at unprecedented levels. Families are losing their homes, having to move into grandma’s house, causing too many people living under the same roof. These can be very stressful events individually and yet many families today are experiencing a combination of these events simultaneously. Seems impossible to reduce stress when the world is caving in on you, right? Many of these dire circumstances are unavoidable, yet what very few people realize is that it is our response to these circumstances that serves to cause our stress rather than the situations in and of themselves.

One way to discover a way out of the chaos, the uncertainty, the unhappy marriages, the fighting between parents with kids who are rebellious, the financial turmoil, all these situations that many would say cause our stress. Reducing stress is more of a function of shifting mindsets than changing circumstance. Most of the stress is caused by fear. One definition of fear uses the word as an acronym: Future Events Already Realized. People usually jump into the future in their minds and imagine what they are afraid will happen. Then they take that anxiety and bring it into their present awareness. People often call this process being “stressed out.” Reducing stress is achieved by reducing worry and anxiety about an uncertain future.

One example is working with a family in which the father had expectations that his son should try out for the football team. The problem was that the son loved basketball and did not feel he was very good at football. The father, a very successful businessman and pillar in the community, felt that football was a sport that helped young men build character, loyalty, and other strong values. After all, it certainly helped him do so when he was a child.

These expectations produced a great amount of stress in the household. The father was continually frustrated, the mother encountered daily stress trying to mediate between the two, the son continually felt that he was never going to amount to anything. This family lived in a minefield of stress on a daily basis.

The main work focused on helping each family member understand the role they played in fostering stress at home. Helping the son learn how to communicate honestly with his dad and help the father learn how to listen. In addition, helping the mother learn how to stay out of the way between father and son and how to take better care of herself in the process.

The father was able to realize that all he wanted was to protect his son from some of the pain he grew up with. The mother recognized that she was falling into that same “peacekeeper” role she played (and felt helpless playing) as a young child. It caused stress way back then and was continuing to cause stress in her current life. The son was able to discover the impact of his behavioral reactions on his relationship with his mom and dad and on his own self-esteem.

Essentially, every member of this family has been able to appreciate the impact of their mindsets on their relationship to one another and the circumstances they face.

It is then learned that reducing stress will occur as you increase your practice. If you practice believing that the circumstances are causing the stress then one will get to be an expert at being stressed out. However as individuals practice changing their mindset about the situations that they face, they not only reduce their stress, but most importantly increase their well-being.
