Is your soul the sum of your mind, body, and spirit?
To say someone has a soul I think simply means that person is alive, has a body, a mind, and a spirit.
So soul could mean life or individual. Both being a sum of the 3.
If the person is alive, then they are a soul or they have a soul. That is, a culmination of the 3 things that give a person life.
I do not believe soul and spirit should be synonymous with one another. I think that causes confusion.
What do you say?
I suppose soul could be thought of as a fourth thing. Perhaps soul glues it all together?
The human personality is identified with mind and spirit held together in functional relationship by life in a material body. This functioning relationship of such mind and spirit does not result in some combination of the qualities or attributes of mind and spirit but rather in an entirely new, original, and unique universe value of potentially eternal endurance, the soul.
I say you caused confusion.

I’ve read that the ancient Egyptians recognized seven aspects of an individual. The soul, I suspect is not really us, in this world, but all of us, in another…
Gestalt is a good word, it has to do with the whole, being more than the sum of the parts. That additional aspect, I suspect is soul.

Consider the "soul" the Personality of the spirit; the spirit of course being You, absent a physical body.
Life, as you say, came long before the body; consider the body a tool or vehicle to explore the third demension or physical world, without it, this realm could not be expreienced as was the intent.
Your conscios awarness was around eons before Earth or "man" came to be; this is a forgotten issue long lost to the ego that repeats to you each day that your simply a man, a physical thing on a physical world; truly, this is one of the largest Lies ever.
Above is described a "Gestalt" and I would agree in this collective idea that the "Holy Spirit" is just that, us, all, the entire collective with a "soul personality" all of their own; this would be God.
So, it appears we are part of something pretty big.

The Soul is separate and is the eternal part of man. The Soul will live for eternity either in Heaven or Hell. That is the choice that we must make. Believe in Christ and be saved or not.

Different cultures view the words Soul, Spirit, Body somewhat differently. My own understanding is broader
than my personal belief at this point. I give you here the description of my belief in answer to your question.
It is that we are:
spirit (1)
we inhabit a body (2), and
we have a soul (3).
I am made of God’s stuff, therefore I am GodStuff.
I am made up of three basic elements of this GodStuff, as part of the human race.
What IAM image/likeness of God = Spirit
Where IAM in my temple/earth vehicle = Body
Who IAM mind + will + emotions = Soul
What I do with this magnificent energetic God-expression
formed as me is up to me. Each man must work out his own salvation (Bible). It is up to me to remember the Truth of my Being. It is God, Jehovah God, The Almighty Creator, Source, Divine Mind, Divine Intelligence,Allah, Great Spirit, The One Power & The One Presence, Father, Abba. When I remember this, my spirit is in active mode. Then my Soul, my thoughts (mind), my choices (will), and how I feel (emotions), begin to get in line with the Truth of my Being, so my Soul remembers and repeats God-thoughts (read Bible, make denial/affirmation statements of Truth) which my Body readily serves. This is the secret of success in all endeavors. God first, God second and God third. Same with the Holy Trinity – Father = God Son = The Christ Holy Ghost = Holy Spirit = Activity of God Comforter The first awareness, God, inspires the Perfect Idea Made Flesh or the Son = The Christ which in turn inspires Holy Spirit into active expression moving in and through each one of us to the degree that we choose in this third dimension.
SO – to me soul and spirit are only synonymous when fully realizing each as yet one and the same without dileniation. Sort of a SpiritSoul, if you will. Until we as mankind realize this fully here in our plane of existence, we should keep them semantically separate to avoid the confusion you so rightly observe occuring when we forget that there are a myriad of perspectives to view this question from culturally speaking.

I believe that the soul is simply the mind. In Gen 2:7 God breathed life into man, and he then became a living soul. From that I gather that the soul is also breath live, but without breath we may still have a soul, but it would be then a dead soul.
In Gen 1:27 God created man in his own image. The image of God would have been spirit. I believe that what he created at that time was spirit, and then in Gen 2:7 he formed a body around that spirit from the dust of the ground then gave it soul life with his breath.
I believe that the body, soul and spirit are three seperate things.
